“I have a right to my feelings and emotions
Black people have a right to heal
We have a right to exist and must be
Our families deserve freedom to play, to laugh, and to love
We can and we must love and support one another
Healing is essential to Black liberation
Let’s get free y’all!”
- Mattice Haynes + Trina Greene Browne, Parenting for Liberation Podcast, Episode 23: Healing & Mental Health in Parenting
Families of Color Seattle: connect, create, love, thrive and heal. Families of Color Seattle: a home, a sanctuary, a sacred space to exist whole, together, free, moving toward liberation, for our children, ourselves, for the child within us reaching out to be held with safety, dignity, respect, belonging. Families of Color Seattle: a practice in vulnerability, solidarity, trust, community, growth and transformation. I express my deepest thanks to my FOCS family for receiving me, and my children, in the fullness of our complex selves, for offering the room to grow in creativity, in my advocacy for Black families to experience ever greater dignity and belonging. For being responsive in creating more room for queer parents & caregivers, single + solo moms, survivor parents, to be met in the fullness of our humanity and the truth of our worthiness.
What a joy and a gift to know FOCS as my home for over two years! Thank you for your trust and collaboration, for evolving to become more inclusive and dynamic in serving our communities. Blessings + gratitude fam!
Kristina

Working alongside the team at FOCS was nothing short of inspiring & life giving. Everyone holds such warmth, depth, thoughtfulness, passion & wisdom that allows them to cultivate spaces that are safe, intentional and healing. I have so much love and respect for FOCS as they consistently choose to devote their time and energy to being a supportive resource to our local BIPOC families. I can’t wait to see how the positive effects continue to help families flourish.
I’ll be continuing my work at Seattle Children’s doing quality of life research with families of children who have chronic illness. In the fall, I will join UW Medical Center’s heart transplant team with hopes of becoming a medical social worker one day. Thank you FOCS for helping to shape me and my practice along the way!

My experience at FOCS has been more than what I could've asked for. I was welcomed with open arms from beginning to end and was able to ask questions, express myself, make mistakes and learn and grow. It really has been a huge honor to learn from and work alongside this BIPOC community who fiercely advocate for families of color.
Post grad, I will be a housing case manager at Refugee Women's Alliance (ReWA) where I will work with women and their families to find stable housing and employment.
