Pain and Promise: Remembering the Fight for School Integration
The Withers Digital Archive: Dr. Ernest Withers’ coverage of the Civil Rights Movement and other moments in American history, including sports, music, politics, and everyday life of figures like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jackie Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Elvis, and Richard Nixon, among many others.
The Memphis 13- seven years after the Brown v. Board of Education decision, the city of Memphis finally confronted the issue of desegregation. In 1961, thirteen African-American first graders entered four formerly all-white schools. Enduring isolation and hostility, these brave children took the first steps in breaking down the color barrier in Memphis public schools.
